Assam: Teenage Girl Found Dead at Home, Police Probe Rape Allegations
In a deeply disturbing incident in Assam's Hailakandi district, a 15-year-old girl was found dead at her home under circumstances that have prompted police to investigate allegations of sexual assault and murder. The discovery was made by her family after they returned from a relative's house where they had attended a feast.
Police sources said the girl's body bore severe injuries, including a bludgeoned face and an object inserted into her private parts. However, officials have stressed that these details are preliminary and subject to confirmation through the post-mortem examination.
The incident took place in the Aloichora area under Katlichera police station late Saturday night. According to family members, the girl had left the feast earlier after an argument with a cousin and returned home alone. When the family arrived, they found her body on the floor, in a condition they said made her almost unrecognisable.
The family has alleged that the girl was raped before being killed. Police have registered a case and detained five individuals for interrogation. Senior Superintendent of Police Amitabh Sinha confirmed that four persons are currently being questioned. 'The family claims she was sexually assaulted, but we are waiting for the post-mortem report before drawing any conclusions. We are investigating the matter thoroughly,' Mr. Sinha said.
Meanwhile, local residents blocked National Highway 6 near the incident site to demand swift arrest and strict punishment for those responsible. The blockade reportedly caused traffic disruption but was later lifted after police assured action.
The case has drawn attention to the safety of women and children in the region, with community members expressing shock and anger. Authorities have urged calm while the investigation proceeds.
As the post-mortem report is awaited, police have not ruled out any angle. The district administration has assured that all possible measures are being taken to ensure a fair and thorough inquiry.
