Assam Floods: PM Modi Assures Full Central Support After Meeting MPs
Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Members of Parliament from Assam on Wednesday to discuss the severe flood situation in the state. The meeting included Union Ministers Sarbananda Sonowal and Pabitra Margherita, among others. Modi assured the delegation of the Central government's complete support in relief and rehabilitation efforts.
In a post on social media platform X, the Prime Minister stated, "Met MPs from Assam and discussed the prevailing flood situation in various parts of the state. The Centre is working closely with the Assam Government in assisting those affected. I pray for everyone's safety and well-being."
Assam has been grappling with widespread flooding triggered by heavy rainfall over the past weeks. Several districts remain submerged, affecting millions of people. Thousands have been displaced and are currently housed in relief camps operated by the state administration.
The Central government has deployed multiple agencies, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), to assist in rescue operations, evacuation of stranded residents, and distribution of essential supplies. The Assam government is providing food, drinking water, medicines, and other necessities while working to restore damaged infrastructure such as roads, power lines, and communication networks.
Authorities continue to monitor embankments and river levels as intermittent rainfall persists, raising concerns of fresh flooding in vulnerable areas. The MPs are understood to have briefed the Prime Minister on the ground situation and ongoing relief measures, while seeking continued Central assistance for rescue, rehabilitation, and restoration works in affected districts.
The Centre has reiterated its commitment to extend all necessary support to the Assam government to ensure timely relief and rehabilitation for those impacted by the floods.
