Assam Floods: Over 1.12 Lakh Affected, More Rain Expected in Multiple Districts
The flood situation in Assam continued to remain serious on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, with over 1.12 lakh people affected across four districts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more rain in several areas already reeling under the deluge, officials from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said.
Several rivers are flowing above their danger levels, posing a threat of flooding in new areas, an ASDMA official said on condition of anonymity. The official urged residents in vulnerable regions to remain vigilant and follow safety advisories.
The IMD's Guwahati centre has issued a forecast of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, along with moderate to heavy rain in parts of Charaideo, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Sivasagar and Tinsukia districts, the official added. These districts have already experienced significant rainfall over the past week, complicating relief efforts.
The Dhansiri river at Numaligarh in Golaghat district continues to flow in a 'severe flood situation', the official noted, advising people to stay away from the river as its water level keeps rising. The Kushiyara river at Sribhumi is also flowing above the danger mark, according to ASDMA's daily flood bulletin.
According to the bulletin, no fresh death was reported in the last 24 hours, keeping the toll in this year's floods at 101. The affected population of more than 1,12,700 is spread across Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon and Sivasagar districts.
Golaghat is the worst-hit district with over 65,000 people affected, followed by Sivasagar with nearly 20,000 and Nagaon with more than 16,000 people reeling under floodwaters. The administration is operating 92 relief camps and distribution centres across five districts, providing assistance to 30,205 affected people, the authority said.
During the last 24 hours, the ASDMA distributed 420.32 quintals of rice, 74.72 quintals of dal, 22.42 quintals of salt and 2,058.95 litres of mustard oil among flood-affected people. At least 441 villages remain inundated, and 10,879.03 hectares of cropland have been damaged across the state.
Floodwaters have also damaged embankments, roads, bridges and other infrastructure in several districts, hampering relief operations. The flooding has affected 31,650 domestic animals and poultry across the state, according to the ASDMA.
Assam, which experiences annual monsoon floods, has seen repeated spells of heavy rain this year. The authorities have urged people in low-lying areas to move to safer locations and co-operate with rescue teams.
