Assam floods: 1.7 lakh affected, river waters above danger level
Over 1.7 lakh people have been affected by flooding in Assam following days of incessant rainfall, with eastern districts bearing the brunt. Five rivers were flowing above the danger mark on Monday morning, according to official reports.
Residents in low-lying areas have reported severe inundation. Prodip Kalita, a resident of Nazira in Sivasagar district, said water inside his house had reached chest level. Authorities have deployed six teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) with 24 boats for rescue operations in Sivasagar and Charaideo districts, while two teams with 10 boats are operating in Jorhat. As of Saturday morning, at least 510 people had been evacuated from Sivasagar alone.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the state government has requested the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force to remain on standby to support evacuation and rescue efforts if needed.
