Arunachal Pradesh: 27 Places Named After 1962 War Heroes, Including Two Memorials

In a significant move to honour the valour of soldiers who fought in the 1962 India-China war, the central government has formally named 27 geographical locations in Arunachal Pradesh after the bravehearts. Among these, two are memorials dedicated to heroes who played a critical role in defending the Subansiri Valley and other strategic areas during the conflict.

The decision, announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs, comes as part of a broader initiative to immortalise the sacrifices of Indian soldiers in the remote border state. The naming of these places—including peaks, ridges, and valleys—is aimed at instilling a sense of national pride and ensuring that future generations remember the courage displayed during one of the most challenging chapters in India's military history.

One of the notable heroes honoured is Havildar Shere Thapa of the 2nd Battalion, Jammu & Kashmir Rifles. He was posthumously credited with single-handedly saving the Subansiri Valley during the Chinese aggression. His memorial, now formally identified, stands as a testament to his extraordinary bravery in the face of overwhelming odds.

Historians and military experts note that the Subansiri Valley was a crucial front during the 1962 war. The region, characterised by dense forests and treacherous terrain, witnessed intense fighting. Havildar Thapa's actions were instrumental in preventing the enemy from advancing further into the valley, thereby protecting both military installations and civilian settlements.
