An Army soldier died early Thursday after his service rifle discharged accidentally in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district, officials said.

The soldier, identified as Naik BD Rao, was serving with the 16 Rashtriya Rifles in the Draba area of Surankote sector. He was on night duty when the incident occurred. “He was found dead at his post,” an official source said.

His body was taken to the Surankote sub-district hospital for medico-legal procedures. A court of inquiry has been ordered to investigate the circumstances, officials stated.

This is the second such incident in the region in recent weeks. On June 4, an Army soldier was injured in a similar accidental discharge while on duty in the Bolnoi sector of Mendhar, Poonch.
