Argentina's Shotless World Cup Final: Defensive Grit Despite Spain's Dominance

In a historic World Cup final, Argentina became the first team to fail to register a single shot in 90 minutes of regulation play. Despite being utterly dominated by Spain in terms of attacking statistics, the Argentine defence held firm, forcing the match into extra time.

The match, played on July 19, 2026, at East Rutherford, New Jersey, saw Spain take 15 shots to Argentina's zero. Spain also earned nine corners while Argentina managed just one. Yet, for all their dominance, Spain could not break through Argentina's resolute defence during regulation.

Argentina's task became even more difficult in second-half stoppage time when midfielder Enzo Fernandez was shown a second yellow card for a reckless challenge on Spain defender Pau Cubarsi. The sending-off left Argentina with 10 players for the remainder of extra time.

While the record of zero shots in a World Cup final is unwanted, it highlights Argentina's disciplined defensive approach under immense pressure. The team will now have to regroup and find a way to create chances if they are to lift the trophy.
