Argentina edge past England 2-1 to set up World Cup final against Spain
Argentina defeated England 2-1 in the second semi-final of the FIFA World Cup on Wednesday, securing a place in the final against Spain. The match, held at the Lusail Stadium, saw Argentina come from behind after trailing to an Anthony Gordon goal in the 55th minute.
With time running out, Enzo Fernandez scored a long-range equaliser in the 85th minute, assisted by Lionel Messi. Then, in the second minute of extra time, Lautaro Martinez headed in a cross from Messi to give Argentina the victory. It was Messi's second assist of the night, extending his streak of a goal or assist in each of his last 11 World Cup matches.
Argentina dominated possession but faced a resilient England defence led by goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, who made several saves. Alexis Mac Allister hit the post twice for Argentina. England had taken the lead through Gordon, who connected with a cross from Morgan Rogers. Earlier, Djed Spence made a crucial tackle to deny Giuliano Simeone a goal.
The first half saw 19 fouls, with two yellow cards shown to Elliot Anderson and Lisandro Martinez. Argentina have now won all six World Cup semi-finals they have contested.
Spain reached the final by defeating France on Tuesday. The final is scheduled for Sunday at the Lusail Stadium.
