AP, UK join hands for urban overhaul, Amaravati to get global expertise
The Andhra Pradesh government and the United Kingdom government on Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen cooperation in urban development and infrastructure, with a special focus on developing Amaravati as a liveable capital.
The agreement was signed at the Secretariat in Velagapudi by Suresh Kumar, Principal Secretary of the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department, and Chaz Walia, Deputy Director of Government Partnerships at the UK Department for Business and Trade. It was formalised in the presence of Andhra Pradesh Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development P. Narayana and senior officials from both sides.
The partnership will cover several key areas, including infrastructure planning, sustainable urban development, technology transfer and innovation, and integrated urban mobility. The collaboration will extend to project design, feasibility assessment, investment planning, programme management and execution, ensuring a comprehensive approach to urban growth.
According to official statements, the initiative will benefit Amaravati as well as 123 municipalities and municipal corporations across Andhra Pradesh. Areas of cooperation will include roads, drainage, drinking water, and solid and liquid waste management infrastructure.
Minister P. Narayana said infrastructure works worth ₹40,000 crore are currently underway across the state with the support of both the central and state governments. He noted that the agreement follows Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu's directions to leverage global best practices in the development of Amaravati.
The MoU marks a significant step in international collaboration for urban development, bringing British expertise in urban planning and sustainable infrastructure to Andhra Pradesh. The UK government, through its Department for Business and Trade, has been actively engaging with Indian states to support infrastructure and development projects. This partnership is expected to introduce innovative solutions and global standards to the state's urban projects.
