Andhra Pradesh’s Sree Charani becomes first woman Test cricketer from state

In a historic achievement for Andhra Pradesh cricket, left-arm spinner N. Sree Charani became the first woman cricketer from the state to represent India in a Test match. The 21-year-old from Kadapa district received her maiden Test cap from vice-captain Smriti Mandhana ahead of the one-off Test against England at Lord’s Cricket Ground, which began on July 10.

Sree Charani’s rise to the national team has been swift. She earned her first call-up to the Indian squad in April 2025 and made her One-Day International (ODI) debut soon after. A month later, she played her first T20 International during India’s tour of England, establishing herself as a promising young spinner.

Since her international debut, Sree Charani has delivered consistent performances across formats. In 21 ODIs, she has taken 27 wickets. In 25 T20 Internationals, she has claimed 42 wickets at an average of 16.24. Her standout performance came in the recent ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in England, where she was the tournament’s highest wicket-taker with 14 wickets in five matches at an average of eight, playing a key role in India’s campaign.

The Andhra Cricket Association (ACA) congratulated Sree Charani on her achievement. In a statement, the ACA called it “a historic day for Indian cricket and a monumental moment for Andhra Pradesh.” The association added, “From the domestic circuits to receiving her prestigious India cap at Lord’s, this is what dreams are made of. The journey has just begun and the whole nation is cheering for you.”

Sree Charani’s debut marks a milestone for women’s cricket in Andhra Pradesh, inspiring young cricketers in the region.
