Andhra Pradesh's 'Lab on Wheels' Brings Free STEM Education to Rural Students
A mobile laboratory designed to provide free practical digital education to students was flagged off in Sri Sathya Sai District on Wednesday. The initiative, called the "Infosys Springboard Maker Lab on Wheels," aims to bring advanced STEM education directly to rural and urban students.
Sri Sathya Sai District Collector A. Shyam Prasad flagged off the vehicle at Kothacheruvu Junior College. Speaking on the occasion, he stressed the importance of students moving beyond theoretical learning and acquiring modern technical skills to keep pace with changing times.
The mobile lab is a joint initiative of the Andhra Pradesh State Skill Development Corporation (APSSDC) and the Infosys Foundation. It will offer hands-on training in electronics, robotics, microcontrollers, and 3D printing, among other areas.
Mr. Shyam Prasad said the lab would play a crucial role in delivering advanced STEM education. He noted that students would learn about electronic components, sensors, LEDs, motors, switches, and basic circuit designing, as well as understand how electrical systems work in daily life.
In robotics, students will get exposure to assembly, sensor integration, motor control, and automation. They will also build small robotic projects to enhance their logical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
Field staff associated with the mobile project highlighted that the 3D printing training would cover digital design to physical prototype conversion, 3D modelling, and custom prototyping. This would bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and industry-required practical skills.
The vehicle is scheduled to visit all government high schools and junior colleges in the district. This will ensure that students from various backgrounds have access to high-tech learning tools and can develop skills relevant to modern careers.
Such initiatives are seen as vital for empowering students in rural areas, where access to advanced laboratories and equipment is often limited. By bringing the laboratory to their doorstep, the programme aims to inspire innovation and creativity among young learners.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance skill development in Andhra Pradesh. Public-private partnerships like this are increasingly being used to supplement government efforts in education and skill training. By leveraging the expertise and resources of companies like Infosys, such programmes can reach a larger number of students and provide them with industry-relevant skills.
Experts often emphasise that hands-on learning is essential for students to succeed in today's technology-driven world. The "Lab on Wheels" concept is particularly beneficial for remote areas, as it eliminates the need for students to travel to distant cities for practical training. This approach not only saves time and resources but also ensures that quality education is accessible to all.
The training modules are designed to be interactive and practical. In electronics, students will work with actual components, learning to design and build simple circuits. This hands-on approach helps demystify technology and makes learning more engaging.
In robotics, they will assemble and program robots, integrating sensors and motors. This fosters creativity and critical thinking, as students see their code translate into physical actions. The 3D printing module will introduce them to the world of digital fabrication, where they can design objects on a computer and print them out in three dimensions.
The mobile lab is equipped with modern tools and technology, including microcontrollers, sensors, and 3D printers. This allows students to gain practical experience that is often missing in traditional classroom settings. By interacting with these tools, they can develop a deeper understanding of STEM concepts and their real-world applications.
