Andhra Pradesh faces 52% rain shortfall; kharif sowing affected
Andhra Pradesh has recorded a cumulative rainfall deficit of 52.28% since June 1, according to data from the Andhra Pradesh Water Resources Information & Management System (APWRIMS). The state received 195.21 mm of precipitation against a normal seasonal average of 409.1 mm, leaving large parts of the agrarian economy dry.
The shortfall is widespread across both major regions. Coastal Andhra Pradesh reports a deficit of 48.49%, while Rayalaseema is 51.68% below normal.
Among districts, Visakhapatnam (−57.12%), East Godavari (−57.49%), and Prakasam (−68.66%) have seen major shortfalls. The most acute situation is in Annamayya district, where the deficit has reached 75.88%, placing it in the 'scanty' category.
The dry spell has severely impacted kharif operations. Fields remain parched, and minor irrigation tanks and reservoirs are depleted. Soil moisture across major agricultural belts is critically low, delaying sowing and stunting crop growth. Farmers who depend heavily on timely monsoon showers are facing uncertainty.
Meteorological experts attribute the weaker monsoon to macro-climatic factors, including El Niño-linked weak circulation patterns. Additionally, successive low-pressure systems forming over the Bay of Bengal have moved northward towards Odisha and West Bengal, robbing Andhra Pradesh of its usual share of rain-bearing weather tracks.
An official from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) noted that intermittent thundershowers and coastal winds have provided only temporary relief. "The state requires sustained, widespread downpours to offset the massive seasonal deficit," the official said.
The southwest monsoon, which runs from June to September, is vital for kharif or summer-sown crops such as paddy, maize, and cotton. A significant shortfall at this stage can disrupt sowing patterns, reduce yields, and affect overall food production. The current deficit, if not bridged in the coming weeks, could have ripple effects on the state's rural economy and food security.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely. While the monsoon season is still underway, the data underscores the need for adaptive strategies, including efficient water management and contingency planning, to mitigate the impact on farmers and agriculture-dependent livelihoods.
