Anantapur targets garbage-free status with new waste plant, legacy cleanup

Swachh Andhra Corporation Limited (SACL) Chairman Kommareddy Pattabhiram and Anantapur Urban MLA Daggupati Venkateswara Prasad have announced plans to transform the Anantapur municipality into a garbage-free town. The initiative involves clearing a long-standing legacy waste dump and establishing a new waste processing plant.

On Tuesday, Mr. Pattabhiram and Mr. Venkateswara Prasad jointly inspected the municipal dumping yard on Gooty road in Anantapur. They stated that efforts are under way to resolve the waste management issue by fully clearing the existing dumping yard and setting up a fresh waste processing plant.

Approximately 3,78,481 metric tonnes of garbage had accumulated at the site over the years, which officials attributed to the negligence of the previous government. The clearance work has been divided into two packages, and tenders have been released and awarded. Waste disposal operations are progressing, although the previous deadline for clearing the waste could not be met.

The Swachh Andhra Corporation plans to establish a plant capable of processing 170 metric tonnes of waste daily at a cost of ₹17.50 crore. Preparations are being made to clear the old site by August 15 to facilitate construction of the new waste processing plant.

A separate location has been identified to handle the approximately 150 metric tonnes of daily city waste, ensuring it does not mix with the existing legacy waste. Old structures at that site will be removed to accommodate daily waste intake. The officials reiterated that the site for the new plant will be cleared and construction work initiated by August 15.
