Amazon Market Value Crosses $3 Trillion as Shares Rise 5%

Amazon's market value crossed the $3 trillion mark for the first time on Monday, as the company's shares continued their upward momentum following a strong earnings report last week.

The technology giant's stock rose 5.2 per cent in early trading to $285.75, lifting its total valuation to approximately $3.1 trillion. This marked a second consecutive session of gains, propelled by investor enthusiasm for Amazon's artificial intelligence (AI) ventures.

Amazon reported quarterly profits exceeding $62 billion, a result aided by significant growth in two AI-related divisions: its cloud computing arm, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and its chip business. AWS revenue surged 37 per cent to $42.2 billion in the quarter, underscoring sustained demand for cloud-based AI services. The quarterly profit figure comfortably exceeded analyst estimates, contributing to the positive market reaction.

CEO Andy Jassy said last week that AWS could become a "trillion-dollar annual revenue business for us in time," reflecting the company's confidence in the expanding AI market. His remarks came as Amazon continues to invest heavily in data centres, custom silicon, and AI capabilities.

Amazon, alongside Microsoft, Alphabet, and Meta, is on track to invest about $700 billion collectively this year in AI data centres, chips, and computing infrastructure. This coordinated spending spree highlights the intense competition among tech giants to secure leadership in AI.

Giovanni Mazzariello, an equity specialist at UniCredit, called the recent results from Amazon and other AI "hyperscalers" "broadly reassuring." He said that rapid revenue growth, widening margins, and a swelling backlog across all four companies demonstrate that AI utilisation and monetisation are rising quickly enough to absorb the growing depreciation and operating costs of infrastructure build-out. Mazzariello noted that the latest earnings reports from the major cloud providers offered clear evidence that returns on AI investments are beginning to materialise.

The $3 trillion valuation places Amazon in a select group of companies, including Apple and Microsoft, that have achieved such a milestone. It underscores the growing influence of technology corporations in global financial markets and the central role of AI in their growth narratives.

Investors have shown increased confidence in Amazon's ability to generate revenue from AI through its cloud platform and proprietary chips. The company's custom-designed processors, optimised for AI workloads, are regarded as a competitive advantage in a crowded marketplace.

Despite the positive momentum, analysts remain mindful of the heavy capital expenditure required for AI infrastructure. Sustained revenue growth will be critical for Amazon and its peers to justify their spending levels and maintain investor trust.

Amazon's share performance is often seen as a bellwether for the technology sector, given its diverse operations spanning e-commerce, cloud computing, and advertising. The company's success in leveraging AI across these areas will likely influence its valuation trajectory in the coming quarters.
