Alleged drug syndicate boss Virender Singh Basoya extradited from UAE, says Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on Friday that the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has secured the return of fugitive drug trafficker Virender Singh Basoya from the United Arab Emirates. Basoya is wanted in India for his alleged role as the head of an international drug network.

In a post on social media platform X, Shah said the Modi government is “relentlessly tracking down drug traffickers hiding abroad and destroying their entire ecosystem with a ruthless approach.” He described the operation as a “new milestone” in the country’s policy of zero tolerance against narcotics.

“By tracing the criminal through a top-to-bottom and bottom-to-top approach, our agencies have once again proven that no matter where drug traffickers hide, they cannot escape the long arm of Indian law,” Shah said.

Basoya is accused of orchestrating large-scale smuggling of narcotics across international borders. While specific charges against him were not detailed in the Home Minister’s announcement, officials familiar with the case said he is suspected of being a key figure in a transnational drug syndicate with links to multiple countries. Further legal proceedings are expected to follow in India, where he will face trial.

The extradition marks the latest success in India’s intensified crackdown on drug trafficking networks operating abroad. In recent years, the NCB has strengthened coordination with foreign law enforcement agencies, particularly in the Gulf region, to trace fugitives and dismantle their operations. The UAE has been a focal point of these efforts due to its large Indian expatriate population and its role as a transit hub for illicit goods.

India has signed extradition treaties with several countries, including the UAE, which allows for the transfer of accused individuals to face justice in India. Officials say the cooperation between the two nations has improved significantly, leading to multiple high-profile extraditions in recent years.

The development comes amid heightened concerns over the trafficking of synthetic drugs through maritime and air routes. Indian authorities have also been strengthening coastal surveillance and international collaboration to curb the inflow of illegal substances. The government’s zero-tolerance policy, announced earlier, has led to a series of seizures and arrests across the country.

Home Minister Shah’s statement reflects the centre’s commitment to pursuing drug criminals beyond national boundaries. He emphasised that the success was achieved through a “top-to-bottom and bottom-to-top approach,” indicating that investigators traced both the leadership and the operational level of the syndicate.

This operation adds to a list of recent extraditions of fugitives from various countries, including the UAE, as part of India’s broader strategy to bring wanted criminals to justice. The NCB is expected to release more details about the case in the coming days.
