AICTE Unveils Four New Schemes for 2026-27 to Modernise India's Technical Colleges
The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has introduced four new schemes for the academic year 2026-27 aimed at strengthening technical education institutions across the country. The schemes, launched under the council's Institutional Development Cell (IDC), are intended to improve laboratory facilities, upgrade institutional infrastructure and provide academic guidance to colleges.
AICTE chairman Professor Yogesh Singh launched the schemes in the presence of Member Secretary Professor Shyama Rath. The four initiatives are the IDEA Lab scheme, Modernisation and Restructuring for Outcome Based System (MODROBS), Margdarshan, and the Grant for Organising Conference (GOC).
AICTE is the national statutory body responsible for approving and regulating technical education institutions in India. It was established under the AICTE Act, 1987, and functions under the Ministry of Education. Its schemes typically cover approved engineering, management, pharmacy and other technical institutions, and are meant to supplement the resources available to colleges for teaching and research.
IDEA Lab
The IDEA Lab scheme is designed to encourage students to move beyond classroom learning and develop innovative ideas that can be applied to practical challenges. It follows a learning-by-doing approach, allowing students to experiment, build prototypes and explore solutions to real-world problems. The initiative also emphasises the practical application of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) concepts.
MODROBS
Under the Modernisation and Restructuring for Outcome Based System scheme, institutions will receive support to upgrade their infrastructure. The aim is to ensure that students and faculty members have access to facilities that support research, teaching and practical training. Institutions can use the assistance to improve the quality of practical education offered on campus.
Margdarshan
The Margdarshan scheme focuses on strengthening colleges through academic monitoring. Under this initiative, established institutions and centrally funded institutions will provide guidance to other colleges. The scheme is expected to help institutions improve their academic practices, share resources and enhance overall capabilities.
Grant for Organising Conference
The Grant for Organising Conference scheme will support institutions in conducting national and international academic conferences. Such events give academicians, researchers and subject experts an opportunity to exchange knowledge, discuss research findings and share new developments in different fields.
Through these four schemes, AICTE aims to widen access to institutional support and encourage greater participation from technical education institutions across India. The council has described the initiatives as part of its effort to reinforce the quality of technical education at the institutional level.
Detailed guidelines for the 2026-27 cycle, including eligibility conditions, funding limits and application timelines, were not specified in the initial announcement. Institutions interested in applying are advised to check AICTE's official portal for the formal scheme documents as they are released. As with previous AICTE schemes, participation is expected to be routed through the council's approval and monitoring processes, and colleges should verify the specific requirements before submitting proposals.
