AICTE allows 4-year BSc graduates into select MTech programmes

AICTE allows 4-year BSc graduates into select MTech programmes

NEW DELHI: Four-year BSc (honours or honours with research) graduates can now seek admission to selected ME and MTech programmes, following a new directive from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). The decision, communicated to technical institutions and admission authorities, creates a fresh pathway from undergraduate science to postgraduate engineering.

The move, however, is not a blanket entry. AICTE has clarified that graduates will be considered only for “relevant and closely aligned” disciplines or specialisations where MSc degree-holders are already eligible. Three-year BSc degree-holders are not covered under the provision.

The directive follows the University Grants Commission's Minimum Standards of Instruction Regulations, 2025, notified on March 26 last year. Those regulations, framed to enable greater academic mobility under the National Education Policy 2020, recognise a four-year undergraduate honours or honours-with-research degree carrying 160 credits. They allow graduates in relevant subjects, including physics, biology and mathematics, to enter two-year ME or MTech programmes.

Until now, BE and BTech degrees have been the principal route to postgraduate engineering. MSc graduates have also been admitted to select programmes in areas such as computer science, biotechnology, mathematics and applied sciences. AICTE's decision extends that limited pathway to four-year BSc graduates without requiring them to first complete an MSc.

The announcement has drawn calls for safeguards. S Vaidhyasubramaniam, Vice-Chancellor of SASTRA University, Thanjavur, urged AICTE to implement the policy only in top 100 NIRF-ranked universities or top 50 engineering institutions, and to make admission through GATE scores mandatory. “To balance PG degree enrolment in technology and science, this new policy should be implemented only in top 100 NIRF universities or top 50 engineering institutions, and admissions shall be through GATE scores only,” he said.

An unnamed director of a government engineering college expressed caution. “Everything is now happening under the NEP 2020 canvas and not all are correct. AICTE should also ensure that this new policy is not misused by private universities for whom AICTE approval is not necessary.”

Under the framework, institutions have the flexibility to set minimum marks or CGPA, require GATE or another entrance-test score, assess domain knowledge, and prescribe prerequisite or bridge courses. Candidates must possess the subjects or credits required for the MTech specialisation concerned. AICTE has stated that academic standards must not be diluted and that the new provision will “supplement and shall not replace” the existing BE/BTech pathway. Admissions must remain within the approved intake and comply with reservation policies and other statutory requirements.

The council will separately publish a discipline-wise mapping linking eligible four-year BSc courses to corresponding ME and MTech programmes. This mapping will determine the actual scale and reach of the change. AICTE has asked institutions, universities, and state and Union territory admission authorities to incorporate the provision in admission notifications and prospectuses.

Supreme Court Upholds Madras HC Order Striking Down Tamil Nadu Reservation Notification for Converts

The Supreme Court has dismissed the Tamil Nadu government's appeal and upheld a Madras High Court order quashing a State notification that extended reservation benefits to converts to Islam from communities already listed as backward. A Bench headed by Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra held that conversion alone does not make a person a member of a notified backward Muslim community, and that the notification created an 'artificial group' without the statutory social checks the law requires.

Starlink curbs hit Ukrainian drones: Is Washington signalling a retreat from Kyiv?

Ukrainian officials say a slowdown in Starlink and Starshield services has disrupted drone operations, frontline logistics and air defence, and some allege deliberate interference. The reports came days after President Donald Trump announced an “energy ceasefire” and a plan to buy diesel from Russia, raising fresh questions in Kyiv about Washington’s reliability as an ally. The claims have not been independently verified.

India Questions UN Rights Body's Silence on PoK Unrest, Alleges 'Extreme Selectivity'

India has asked the UN human rights office to state when it will issue a report on steps taken by Pakistan to address concerns in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, citing earlier OHCHR statements on killings, internet curbs and detained leaders. New Delhi accused the office of 'extreme selectivity' and double standards, while restating that its law enforcement acts in accordance with the law and that Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are integral parts of India.
