After 10 years and acquittal, alleged gangster Krishna Pillai returns to Hong Kong

Ten years after being extradited from Singapore to face trial in three criminal cases, Kumar Krishna Pillai, an India-born alleged gangster, has been repatriated to Hong Kong, where he is a citizen. The decision follows his acquittal in all three cases for which he was extradited.

On February 13, a Mumbai sessions court directed the police to send Pillai back to Hong Kong, stating that he cannot be kept in India after being acquitted in the specific cases that formed the basis of his extradition. Sources said that after being informed he could leave the country on his own, Pillai returned to Hong Kong on Thursday.

Pillai was born and raised in the Vikhroli suburb of Mumbai. He left India in 1997 and later obtained Hong Kong citizenship. He was arrested in Singapore in 2016 and extradited to India on June 26 that year to face three cases pending before the Mumbai Police crime branch.
