Aerospace Industry Struggles to Attract Young Talent as AI Sector Poaches Engineers
For Hassan Butt, a 17-year-old British student volunteering at the Farnborough airshow this week, there was nothing cooler than watching the planes and thinking about the physics that kept them airborne. “Everyone when they’re kids, they look up, they see the planes flying and they think, damn…” he said as he fielded questions from passersby at a stand. His dream was to pursue a career in aerospace and engineering with a focus on missiles.
Across the exhibition hall, aerospace companies had set up numerous stalls and displays, launching recruitment campaigns aimed at tapping into that enthusiasm and luring Butt and other potential recruits from Generation Z and Alpha. The industry, long a magnet for young people fascinated by flight and technology, now faces stiff competition from the rapidly growing artificial intelligence sector, which offers higher salaries and a perception of cutting-edge innovation.
According to industry experts, the demand for engineers and data scientists in AI has surged, drawing talent away from traditional aerospace roles. “We are competing for the same pool of bright young minds,” said a spokesperson for a leading aerospace manufacturer at the airshow. “AI is exciting, but aerospace offers equally challenging problems—like sending humans to Mars or developing sustainable aviation.”
The recruitment drives at Farnborough included hands-on activities, mentorship programs, and scholarships designed to showcase the real-world impact of aerospace engineering. Companies emphasised the stability and long-term career prospects of the sector, contrasting it with the volatility of some tech startups.
However, with AI companies often offering stock options and remote work flexibility, the battle for talent is intensifying. Butt, while still determined to enter aerospace, acknowledged the allure of AI: “I’ve thought about it, but aerospace is where my heart is. The feeling of seeing something you built fly—there’s nothing like it.”
