Adityanath Rebukes Rahul Gandhi for Manusmriti Remarks, Cites Oath to Constitution
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday targeted Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, over his recent remarks on the Manusmriti, accusing him of treating India's traditions and heritage with disrespect. Speaking at an event marking the 222nd birth anniversary of 1857 revolt leader Rana Beni Madhav Baksh Singh, Mr. Adityanath said Mr. Gandhi, having sworn allegiance to the Constitution, should not denounce the country's cultural legacy.
"Rahul ji, the country does not have any expectations from you as an individual. But as the Leader of Opposition in India's Parliament, the country's highest panchayat, you are accountable to the country's democracy," Mr. Adityanath said. He added that Mr. Gandhi had taken an oath on the Constitution and yet considered it his birthright to denounce India's traditions and heritage. The Chief Minister also alleged that Mr. Gandhi defames Uttar Pradesh when traveling outside the state and insults India when abroad.
Mr. Gandhi, who represents the Raebareli Lok Sabha constituency, had on Saturday spoken to girl students in Maharashtra, criticising the "Manusmriti mindset" and urging them to "smash patriarchy". He said women belonged to themselves, not to their fathers, husbands, or sons. These remarks drew sharp reactions from several BJP leaders, including Mr. Adityanath.
Referring to the Manusmriti, the Chief Minister suggested Mr. Gandhi read ancient texts such as the Atharvaveda, Shatapatha Brahmana, and Matsya Purana to gain proper understanding. "You comment on Manu, Ram or India's heritage. If you want to know about Manu, read these texts," he said.
Mr. Adityanath also raised other issues, questioning Mr. Gandhi's stance on national security and democracy. "Whenever the Indian Army fights enemies on the borders, you demand proof from the soldiers. In the country's fight against terrorism, you directly or indirectly encourage anti-national elements," he alleged. He also referenced the Congress's role in the 1975 Emergency, questioning the party's commitment to democratic values.
The Chief Minister urged Mr. Gandhi to play a constructive role as Leader of Opposition, saying the country expected a positive contribution but that Mr. Gandhi had "completely distanced himself from his responsibilities". He asked, "Why do you want to ruin the future of India's present generation at the hands of urban Naxals? Why do you want to destroy India's heritage? Why do you want to play with India's future?"
Political analysts note that such exchanges reflect the intense ideological divide between the ruling BJP and the Congress, particularly over issues of cultural heritage and social reform. The Manusmriti, an ancient legal text, has been a subject of debate, with critics pointing to its discriminatory provisions while supporters view it as a valuable historical document. Mr. Gandhi's comments have reignited this debate in the run-up to state elections in Maharashtra.
