Activists Booked for Assaulting Two Men Over Alleged Illegal Stay Near Bengaluru
The Bengaluru district police have registered a case against a group of activists for allegedly assaulting two men in Chokkanahalli village, under the Nandagudi police station limits. The incident occurred on Friday when the activists visited a labourers' colony, accusing the two men of being Bangladeshi nationals residing illegally in India.
According to police, the activists recorded the assault on video and later circulated the footage on social media. In the video, the activists are seen questioning the men and physically assaulting them. The activists also alleged that some undocumented immigrants were paying 'protection money' to police personnel and claimed to have found contact numbers of certain police officers on the mobile phones of the two men.
The police have not confirmed the nationality of the two men, nor have they verified the activists' allegations of illegal stay or payment of protection money. A senior police officer stated that an investigation is underway and that the case has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for assault and other offences.
The incident has raised concerns about vigilante actions and the treatment of migrant workers. The police have urged the public not to take the law into their own hands and to report any suspicions of illegal immigration to the authorities.
