Activist Wangchuk in Face-Off with Police at Safdarjung Hospital
Activist Sonam Wangchuk, who recently ended a 26-day hunger strike, has released a video showing a confrontation with police personnel at Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi. In the footage, Wangchuk is seen leaving his ward and arguing with officers after he was denied permission to transfer to Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon.
Wangchuk alleged that his stay at Safdarjung Hospital amounted to detention, stating that no visitors were allowed to meet him, including those who had travelled from Ladakh. He claimed that mobile phones and laptops were prohibited, and that he was under constant surveillance by about 150 police personnel. He compared the hospital environment to a 'Cant' and said he felt confined like in a jail.
The Delhi High Court had previously allowed his transfer to Medanta Hospital, but Wangchuk said the hospital administration did not comply with the order. He demanded that police either arrest him or let him go, questioning the delay in his discharge.
As of now, there has been no official response from the hospital or police authorities regarding his allegations. The video has sparked discussion on the treatment of activists and the implementation of court orders.
