Accused in 2020 Punjab Sacrilege Case Beheaded at Home After Bail
A 45-year-old man, Mewa Singh, who was accused in a 2020 sacrilege case and had been released on bail recently, was killed in a brutal attack at his residence in Ladpur Tooran village near Mandi Gobindgarh, Punjab, police said on Tuesday.
According to officials, the incident occurred around midnight when an unidentified assailant attacked Singh with a sharp-edged weapon, severing his head. The attacker fled the scene after the assault.
Upon receiving a report, police officers arrived at the location and initiated an investigation. A forensic team was also dispatched to collect evidence from the site.
Police have launched a manhunt for the suspect and are exploring possible motives behind the murder. The victim was an accused in a sacrilege incident that took place at a gurdwara in the same village in 2020.
The case has drawn attention to ongoing tensions related to sacrilege incidents in Punjab, a state that has witnessed heightened religious sensitivities in recent years. Authorities have urged calm and assured that the investigation will be thorough.
