44 Somali Pirates Get Life Imprisonment in Mumbai Court for 2024 Hijackings
A special court in Mumbai on Monday sentenced 44 Somali pirates to life imprisonment for their involvement in two separate hijacking cases in 2024. The pirates had been arrested by the Indian Navy earlier that year.
Special Judge Sanjay Dige pronounced the sentence after finding the accused guilty under several provisions, including the Maritime Anti-Piracy Act, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to attempted murder and kidnapping.
In their pleas before the court, the pirates cited hardships due to differences in language, diet, culture, and lifestyle, seeking leniency. However, the court rejected these submissions and imposed the maximum penalty under law.
The cases stem from two operations by the Indian Navy in March 2024. In the first, nine pirates were apprehended after the Navy intercepted an Iranian fishing vessel they had hijacked, which also carried some Pakistani nationals. In the second, 35 pirates were captured for hijacking a merchant vessel.
The sentencing underscores India's commitment to upholding maritime law and deterring piracy in the Indian Ocean region. The trial was conducted in accordance with standard legal procedures, ensuring the rights of the accused were respected.
