40% of Healthcare Workers Face Physical Violence Globally, WHO Reports

The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that four in ten healthcare workers experience physical violence during their careers. When verbal abuse is included, the proportion rises to over 60%. This global crisis affects both developed and developing nations, with studies showing lifetime prevalence rates of 91% in Germany, 90% in China, 84.5% in Peru, 84% in Turkey, and 77.3% in India.

The issue came into focus in India following an assault on doctors at Shastri Nagar Hospital in Kalyan, Maharashtra, on Monday evening. The attack by a local corporator prompted the Indian Medical Association (IMA) to release an interactive digital grid documenting 100 assaults on doctors reported across the country in recent years.

Experts identify common triggers for violence: overcrowded hospitals, staff shortages, long waiting times, poor communication, and unrealistic patient expectations. Dr Santosh Kadam, former state IMA chief, attributes the attacks to growing impatience in society. 'Everyone wants speedy results. People are spending money, so they want a 100% result,' he said.

While 19 Indian states have enacted laws to protect healthcare workers, enforcement remains weak. In Maharashtra, 738 cases were registered under the state's prevention of violence act between 2010 and 2021, but only four resulted in convictions. Experts call for a stronger national law and better implementation.

International examples show that legal reforms can reduce violence. Spain strengthened legal protection by recognising assaults on healthcare workers as crimes against the state, leading to a 50% drop in incidents. In Singapore, offenders face fines up to S$5,000 or jail up to 12 months.

However, experts caution that laws alone are insufficient. Dr Suhas Pingle, former Maharashtra Medical Council member, highlights underlying issues: 'Medical practice has become tech-driven, and expectations of patients are sky high. Barely 2% of the budget is meant for healthcare. Doctors have to see hundreds of patients in a short span of time. This creates an environment where the risk of violence is high.'

To address the problem, a combination of measures is needed: greater investment in healthcare, stronger enforcement of laws, improved doctor-patient communication, and public awareness campaigns. Many European countries observe March 12 as a day to raise awareness about violence against healthcare professionals.

The WHO data underscores the urgent need for action to protect those who provide essential care. As the medical fraternity continues to press for stronger legal protection, the global community must work together to ensure a safe working environment for healthcare workers.
