39 Amarnath Pilgrims Injured as Bus Skids Off Road in Kashmir
At least 39 pilgrims returning from the Amarnath Yatra were injured when their bus skidded off the road and rolled into a ditch in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on Tuesday, July 27, 2026.
The accident occurred around 5:30 a.m. near the S-Mode area of Ganiwan in the Gund area of Ganderbal. Local residents said the bus, registered as AR11 D5655, lost control and plunged into a low-lying area.
Security forces and local volunteers quickly arrived at the scene to rescue the trapped pilgrims, including women and children. All injured were taken to the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) in Srinagar for treatment.
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said, “39 pilgrims returning after Darshan of Baba Barfani sustained injuries and are currently undergoing treatment at SKIMS. I have directed health officials to ensure all necessary assistance and the best possible medical care.”
Officials reported that several of the injured suffered head injuries. Mr. Sinha also spoke with the Deputy Commissioner of Ganderbal and health officials to coordinate the response. The police will investigate the cause of the accident, officials added.
The Amarnath Yatra, a major Hindu pilgrimage to a cave shrine in the Himalayas, attracts lakhs of pilgrims each year. Road accidents during the Yatra have occurred in the past due to challenging terrain and weather conditions.
