215 Academics Condemn Priyanka Gandhi’s Remark on IIT Director as Undermining Scientific Temper
Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s recent comment in the Lok Sabha, widely interpreted as referring to IIT Madras Director V. Kamakoti, has drawn sharp criticism from over 200 academics across India. In an open letter, vice chancellors, former vice chancellors, and scholars expressed disappointment over what they described as a dismissive label that undermines the constitutional value of scientific temper.
The controversy arose during Gandhi’s speech on The Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, on Tuesday. Without naming anyone, she referred to a ‘gaumutra expert’—a term understood to target Kamakoti, who is a member of a new task force on exam reforms. The open letter, signed by 215 individuals, stated: “To dismiss a scholar through a label rather than engage with the substance of his views risks undermining the very scientific temper that our Constitution calls upon every citizen to develop.”
The letter highlighted Kamakoti’s academic credentials: an M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering from IIT Madras, over 150 research papers, and involvement in more than 50 R&D projects. He has received awards such as the DRDO Academic Excellence Award and the Techno Visionary Award from the Indian Electronics and Semiconductor Association. He led the development of India’s first industry-grade microprocessor.
The academics noted that history shows ideas once considered implausible have later found scientific validation, while widely accepted beliefs have been discarded. They urged that criticism should focus on arguments and evidence, not on diminishing an individual’s scholarship. “Our scientists, scholars and educators deserve to know that they can participate in public debate without fear of being reduced to dismissive labels,” the letter said.
Priyanka Gandhi has not issued a response to the letter. The incident has sparked a broader debate about the nature of political discourse and respect for academic expertise in India.
