20-year-old collapses, dies during Agniveer recruitment drive in Puducherry
Puducherry: A 20-year-old man died on Saturday after collapsing during an endurance test conducted as part of the Agniveer recruitment drive at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex here. The deceased has been identified as Gokul, a resident of Arani in the neighbouring Tiruvannamalai district of Tamil Nadu.
According to police, Gokul was participating in a running event, a key component of the physical fitness tests for the Agniveer scheme, when he suddenly collapsed. Personnel present at the venue rushed him to the Government General Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. A post-mortem examination has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
The Agniveer recruitment process, introduced by the central government in 2022, involves rigorous physical tests including running, push-ups, and other endurance exercises. These tests are designed to assess the physical fitness of candidates aspiring to serve in the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force under the short-service model. While such drills are intended to select the fittest candidates, instances of aspirants collapsing or suffering medical emergencies have been reported in the past across various states.
Local officials have expressed condolences to the family of the deceased. A senior police officer stated that an inquiry has been initiated and that all necessary protocols were followed in the immediate response. "The medical team at the venue attended to him quickly and he was shifted to the hospital without delay," the officer said, adding that the family has been informed and the body will be handed over after the autopsy.
The death has sparked concern among recruitment aspirants and their families, who often travel long distances and undergo strenuous preparation for these tests. While some have raised questions about the adequacy of medical screening before such physical trials, the authorities have emphasised that standard operating procedures are in place. The district administration has assured that they will cooperate with the investigation and provide all required assistance to the bereaved family.
Gokul's untimely demise has also reignited debates about the intensity of physical tests in recruitment drives, with some activists calling for better medical supervision and pre-screening of candidates. However, officials have pointed out that such tests are conducted under the supervision of trained personnel and medical staff, and that any underlying health conditions are identified during the medical examination phase.
The Agniveer scheme, which recruits personnel for a four-year tenure, has been a subject of mixed reactions since its launch. While supporters see it as a way to modernise the armed forces, critics have questioned its long-term impact on recruitment and the welfare of short-service personnel.
