1996 Prison Murder in Nagercoil: 36-Member Gang Decapitated Inmate Inside Jail
The recent murder of prisoner S. Sabari Varman inside Nagercoil jail has brought back memories of a horrific incident from 1996, when a 36-member gang broke into the same prison and decapitated an inmate. The earlier killing, which occurred in the early hours of April 9, 1996, exposed severe security lapses and raised questions about prison safety.
The victim, identified as Muthulingam alias Lingam, was a former kabaddi player from Kanniyakumari district who had been implicated in several murder cases. He was lodged in the Nagercoil District Sub-Jail since 1995. Around 3 a.m. on April 9, a gang arrived in a van, used a ladder to scale the 15-foot outer wall, and jumped inside. Prison warden Ponnambalam was brutally assaulted, and the intruders smashed the glass box containing prison keys to access the cells.
The prison was severely understaffed, with only eight personnel including the superintendent, and just two guards on duty at the time. The other guard, Sudalai, was also beaten. The facility housed 84 inmates, including eight women. The invading gang, armed with country-made guns, a .315 rifle, knives, and sickles, cut telephone lines before reaching Cell Number 8, where Lingam and eight others were locked. Using torches to identify him, the attackers decapitated Lingam inside the cell. Four other inmates were stabbed; one of them, Babu Suresh, later died from his injuries.
The entire operation took less than 20 minutes. Before fleeing, the gang fired shots into the air, scaled the wall using the same ladder, and escaped with Lingam's head, leaving behind a pistol, a cartridge, and a knife. Lingam's head was later recovered near the Anna Bus Stand in Meenachipuram. Prison Superintendent Joseph Gunamani and wardens Ponnambalam and Sudalai were suspended following the incident.
Investigation revealed that the motive was a long-standing enmity between Lingam and a man named Gunaseelan from Agastheeswaram. Both factions had been involved in retaliatory killings. When Lingam was remanded to the jail in 1996, Gunaseelan's faction decided to eliminate him inside the prison. A chargesheet was filed against 24 individuals. The trial court sentenced two to double life imprisonment, five to life imprisonment, and others to lesser terms.
However, on appeal, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court acquitted all 11 convicted individuals, ruling that the prosecution had failed to prove the charges. The case remains a stark example of prison security failures and the challenges of delivering justice in complex criminal networks.
