15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi becomes youngest Indian to debut in international cricket

At just 15 years old, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi on Saturday became the youngest cricketer to play international cricket for India. He received his maiden cap ahead of India's second T20I against England at Old Trafford. Tilak Varma, who had captained him in a tri-series in Sri Lanka, presented the cap.

Sooryavanshi breaks the long-standing record held by Sachin Tendulkar for the youngest Indian male debutant. Tendulkar was 16 years and 205 days old when he made his debut in 1989. Sooryavanshi also surpasses Shafali Verma, who was a few days older when she debuted in September 2019, to become the youngest Indian across men's and women's international cricket.

India captain Shreyas Iyer confirmed at the toss that Sooryavanshi replaces opener Sanju Samson in the playing XI. The teenager's selection follows strong performances in domestic and age-group cricket.
