101-Year-Old Man Walks Again After Hip Replacement Surgery in Hubballi
A 101-year-old retired teacher from Haveri district has regained mobility after a successful hip replacement surgery performed by an orthopaedic surgeon in Hubballi. The patient, Imam Sab, a resident of Hire Bengideri village in Shiggaon taluk, fractured his hip bone after a fall in his bathroom, leaving him immobile.
According to Dr. Bhaskar Rao, the orthopaedic surgeon who performed the surgery on July 7, the patient was able to walk with the assistance of a walker the very next day. He was discharged from the hospital on the fourth day post-surgery. During a follow-up visit on July 16, Sab was found to be walking comfortably with the walker.
The family had approached several hospitals before consulting Dr. Rao, but many doctors advised against surgery due to the risks associated with the patient's advanced age. Dr. Rao decided to proceed after a thorough evaluation of the patient's health parameters.
The surgery involved the use of a cobalt-chromium hip implant. Dr. Rao stated that the procedure was carried out with utmost caution, taking into account the patient's age. The successful outcome has given the centenarian a new lease on life.
Hip fractures in elderly patients are serious injuries that can lead to loss of independence and increased mortality. Surgical intervention, when feasible, can restore mobility and improve quality of life. This case highlights the importance of individualized medical decision-making, even for very elderly patients.
